CHAPTER SIX

Don’t even try to figure out this situation, Shelana reasoned with herself. Last night had not unfolded the way she had anticipated. Kaveh had said that he respected her and would do whatever she wished. They had both declared that they would wait to see what the future held . . . Well, what did any of their declarations have to do with sex? Should she have acted more seductive? At Holy Ground, intimacy was freely given, whenever and with whomever, as long as all of the participants were consenting adults. Shelana was confused and felt a kind of rejection and disappointment. She didn’t care for this sort of sad, empty and confused state.

Very strange. Get busy and get home. You still have chores to do before you sleep, and the girls need their nightly feeding; you should take them out for some exercise as well. She came to a halt again and told herself she was not allowed to think about it any longer. She would keep extremely busy and then see how she felt tomorrow. A new day would shed a slightly different light on any situation. She sighed deeply as she arrived back at her abode.

Sleeping had never been easy for Shelana. The worst part of her ‘night owl’ tendencies was wandering about in the dark and inadvertently bothering other people who were asleep. She crept around her house holding a small candle, fed Mara and Mut, then decided to take them out for a short walk to make sure they were drained for the night. She speculated that repose was impossible for awhile anyway. As she led the cats outside the village her eyes slowly became accustomed to the darkness, which was actually a dim lightness. The moon looked like exactly half of her bright roundness, half of a disc hung in the sky to guide her. She and
